Post Operative Surgery Instructions

This is a summary of the post operative instructions given to patients following oral surgery some may apply to you depending on how complex the surgery was.

If there are any issues call the office at 416-229-0416 and the message will inform you how to get in touch with Dr. Jeff or after hours support.

Bleeding

It is normal to have bleeding after surgery.  You will notice blood in your saliva and taste blood for the next few days; this is very normal  If you look in your mouth and see blood pooling or as Dr. Jeff says it looks like Niagara falls is pouring out -- that is something you should contact Dr. Jeff for.

You will not leave the clinic with the bleeding not controlled.   We ask for you to bite on gauze for at least 30 minutes after leaving the office.  The gauze adds pressure to the surgical site and acts like a band-aid.

We ask that you DO NOT drink through a straw or spit out.  Any positive or negative pressure can cause the bleeding to increase. If you feel like you must spit out do not use any force and let the saliva fall out of your mouth.

Pain

You just had a tooth out and will be sore.  Depending on how difficult it was to get the tooth out the pain will vary per person per procedure.  Your jaw might be sore following keeping your mouth open for so long as well.

Dr Jeff would have told you pain meds to take:

As a reference for over the counter medications --

400mg Ibuprofen (Advil) can be taken every 4 hours

OR

1000mg of Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be taken up to 4000mg per day in a healthy adult

OR

400mg of Ibuprofen and 500mg of Acetominaphen every 4 hours.

If Dr. Jeff prescribed you a pain killer medication please take it as necessary and as directed

Any questions about pain management please get in contact with Dr. Jeff
